TIL that old electrician was right about my breaker layout... cost me $150 to fix
A guy named Larry at the Amarillo Electrical Supply told me last spring to put my critical loads on the left side of the panel. I thought he was just being old school and did it my own way. Fast forward to last Tuesday, a storm knocked out power and I couldn't find my main breaker in the dark since the label was under my backup battery. Had to call a guy out to rewire half the panel, cost me $150 and a whole afternoon. Has anyone else ignored advice from a older tradesperson and regretted it?

Oh man, I totally feel your pain. Older tradespeople usually have a good reason for their weird advice, learned that the hard way too.

Every customer who's ever told me "my grandfather did it this way" has ended up being right about something I overlooked. It's like that gut feeling you get when the GPS says one thing but your dad's old road trick saves you 20 minutes. We've gotten so used to fancy shortcuts that we forget some wisdom just comes from doing things WRONG a hundred times first.
