Wasted $1,200 on a website builder that promised local leads

Six months ago I paid $1,200 upfront for one of those drag-and-drop website builders that guaranteed they'd get me calls from Amarillo homeowners looking for landscaping. Total scam. The site looked fine on my phone but nobody ever saw it because they never did any real SEO work for my area. I got maybe 2 leads total in 6 months, both from my own Facebook posts. Meanwhile my buddy runs a simple WordPress site with local keywords and he's booked out for weeks. Has anyone else gotten burned by these paid website services that promise the moon but deliver nothing?

Ngl I think the real trap with those services is they treat every small business the same. Your landscaping buddy in Amarillo has totally different competition and search habits than some roofer in Austin or whatever. Those companies use the same generic template for everyone and call it "local SEO." What actually works is getting yourself on Google Business Profile and asking every single customer to leave a review with a keyword in it, like "best landscaping in Amarillo." That alone beats any overpriced site builder hype.
