Dubbed Goku in 1999 vs today, night and day shift

I rewatched the Ocean dub of Dragon Ball Z episodes from 1999 and compared them to the current Funimation release. The old voices had this raw energy that matched the 90s action vibe, while the new cast sounds cleaner but almost too polished. What caused that switch, is it just better tech or did the directing philosophy flip entirely after 2010? Which era holds up better for you when you rewatch the Saiyan saga?
