Finally figured out why I hated subbed anime for years
I always thought subs were distracting until I watched Your Name with a group that had already seen it, and they pointed out how much emotion gets lost in the dub's translation choices. Anyone else find that certain shows just hit different in the original language?

Oh man, I had a buddy who swore he'd never watch subbed anime because he thought the voices sounded "too whiny" or whatever. Then he got dragged to a screening of A Silent Voice at a local con where the sub was the only version playing. He spent the whole movie getting really quiet, and after it ended he just sat there for a minute. Later he told me that the voice acting in the subbed version made him actually feel the weight of the scenes in a way he'd never experienced with dubs before. He said the crying scenes hit him so hard he got chills because the Japanese voice actors put so much raw emotion into it. Now he won't watch anything dubbed if he can help it, and he's always bugging me to watch things in Japanese with him. Did you find yourself avoiding certain genres in subbed form before this clicked for you?
