Overheard a couple arguing about filler episodes in a coffee shop

They were going back and forth about whether filler in a long running show like 'One Piece' ruins the pacing or gives the characters room to breathe. The guy said, 'The G-8 arc is filler and it's better than half the canon stuff.' It made me realize I've been skipping filler lists without giving them a chance. Do you have a favorite filler arc that actually added something good?

Wait, actually the G-8 arc is filler? I always thought that was canon for some reason. I mean, it's so good it feels like it should be.

Had a buddy in high school who refused to watch the Naruto filler where they go looking for that stupid bug. He sat through the whole war arc complaining about pacing but wouldn't touch a single filler episode. Then years later we're at a bar and he's like "remember when Naruto had that whole thing in the bathhouse?" and I had to tell him that was filler. He went home and binged like 50 episodes in a week and called me at 2 AM going on about how he finally understood the side characters. People get so weird about filler being "not canon" but half the time those are the scenes you actually remember.

My buddy Mark actually skipped the G-8 arc on his first watch because he heard it wasn't in the manga. He finally gave it a shot last year and called me up all annoyed saying he missed out for years on some of the best character moments in the whole show. He still brings it up how he feels like he cheated himself out of something Oda probably would've put in if he had more pages.
