People keep calling Dragon Ball Z the first big action anime in the US and it bugs me
I keep seeing this claim in YouTube comments and Discord servers, that DBZ kicked off action anime in America, and I finally looked up the dates to check it. DBZ didn't hit US TVs until September 1996, and it was a messy dub that got pulled after two seasons. Sailor Moon was already airing in the US in August 1995, and Ronin Warriors beat both of them in 1995 too. If we're talking about the show that actually made anime a Saturday morning thing for kids my age, it was Sailor Moon and then Pokemon in 1998, not Goku. I'm not saying DBZ wasn't huge, because it was, but it came after the door was already open. Does anyone else remember catching Sailor Moon before school in like 1996, or was that just a regional thing?
The "door was already open" point is what got me, since I used to repeat the DBZ line without checking dates. Then I remembered watching Sailor Moon before school in 96 and realized my whole timeline was off.
