PSA: I finally watched subs with a phone in my hand and figured out why I could not keep up

For years I thought I was just bad at reading subs fast. Then two weeks ago I watched all 26 episodes of a show in one run and caught myself scrolling during the slow parts. That was the tip off. I put the phone in the other room and suddenly I was catching small stuff in the dialogue I used to miss, like word jokes and how characters say each other's names. My pause count went from about 15 an episode to like 2. Turns out my problem was never reading speed, it was split attention. Now I am wondering how many shows I wrote off as confusing just because I was half watching. Does anyone else have a habit like that they did not notice for years?
