Rant: Dubbed vs subbed anime is no contest once you actually hear the original voice actors
I sat through 12 episodes of a show with the English dub and switched to subs after someone told me the Japanese VA nailed the emotional scenes, and it literally felt like watching a completely different story with actual feeling behind it so has anyone else had that moment where you realized you'd been watching the worse version the whole time?

I sat through 12 episodes" and you think that makes you an expert? I have watched both dubs and subs for years, and sometimes the English cast brings a totally different energy that works just as well. Some of those "worse versions" got me into anime in the first place, so I can't write them off that easily.

That's fair, and I get where you're coming from, but I think you're mixing up two different things a bit. The English cast can definitely bring a different energy, but calling it a "totally different" version isn't quite accurate since the script and timing usually stay close to the original Japanese. I've seen some dubs where the voice actors nail it, like the Cowboy Bebop cast, but there are also ones where the direction feels rushed and the emotion gets lost. Have you noticed a specific show where the dub really changed how you felt about a character?
