Rewatching Black Lagoon in English dub changed my whole take on action scenes
I always watched subbed, thought dubs were for casuals. Then I got three friends together last Friday for a rewatch of Black Lagoon, and one guy insisted on the English version. I rolled my eyes so hard. But Revy's voice actress actually killed it with the screaming and cursing. It made the gunfights feel more real somehow. The lip flaps matched better than I expected too. Now I'm going back through other 2000s action anime to see if the dubs hold up. Anyone else written off a version for years and then flipped on it?

Nah hold on, Black Lagoon's English dub is actually one of the better ones out there. Revy's VA Mary Elizabeth McGlynn really brought that chaotic energy. But you're giving the lip flaps too much credit, most dubs from that era don't sync up that well. The Japanese version was recorded first so the mouth movements were made for that language. If it looked good it was probably just luck or they fudged the timing on purpose.
