Serious question, did the sub or dub change how a scene hit for you?

I watched the same episode twice last Saturday, once subbed and once dubbed, and the big fight felt totally different in each one. In the sub the yelling sounded raw and in the dub it came off almost calm, which made me wonder if the voice actor got a different note from the director. Does a dub ever make a scene work better for you, or do you just stick to one and never look back?
