Subbed vs dubbed debate ruined my watch party in Dallas

I pulled up 3 different streaming options on my laptop just to compare translation lines and the sub had way better character depth in that key scene. The dub changed a joke about magic to a food pun and it killed the mood. Now I'm wondering if I should just do solo watches from here on out, or if there's a way to prep people for these debates before they start.

the dub changed a joke about magic to a food pun" - that's not really a translation thing, that's more like the dub writers just making their own call to fit the mouth flaps. Solo watch is fine, but honestly the debate is half the fun if you tell people ahead of time you're watching with subs.
