Subbed vs dubbed rewatch changed my whole take on that scene

I finally rewatched Attack on Titan season 1 last month after only ever seeing the dub, and I gotta say, the subbed version hit completely different for me. When Eren is screaming at the titan that eats his mom, the Japanese voice actor goes way more raw and broken sounding, while the dub felt more like standard anime shouting to me. I grew up on dubs, always defended them, thought subs were for elitists, but after 26 episodes I switched sides completely. Now I'm going back through my old favorites like Death Note and Cowboy Bebop to see which ones hold up better in sub. Has anyone else done a full rewatch in the other language and found their opinion flip on a show they already loved?

Saw a voice actor interview where they said the dub director forced calmer takes, totally changed how I hear that scene now.

Honestly that hits hard. I rewatched that episode after reading interviews like that and it felt totally different, the quiet moments just land heavier knowing the actor fought for the softer take. Ngl it makes me respect the dub team more, but also kinda mad they almost didn't let it happen. You can hear the restraint in the delivery now, like the character's holding back something real. It's wild how one director's call shapes the whole vibe for years after.
