That late night chat about dubs changed my take on subs
Last Friday my neighbor Dave, who only watches dubbed anime, caught me rewatching an old show with subtitles. He said he could never follow subs because he misses the action on screen, and honestly I laughed it off at first. But then he pointed out how much voice acting sells a scene, and got me thinking about why I started with subs back in 2005. Now I'm trying a dub on one show this season just to see if I've been too closed off. Has anyone else switched sides after a talk like this?

Wait, he said "how much voice acting sells a scene?" Like, that was the thing that got you? Dave the dub guy said that out loud? Man, I gotta sit with that for a sec. I've been a subs-only person since like 2009 and I always figured dubs were for people who just couldn't read fast enough. But he's not wrong, the right voice can flip a whole scene. I remember a sad part in an old show where the sub voice just kinda flatlined it for me, and I bet a good dub actor would've wrecked me. Now I'm kinda curious what Dave's favorite show sounds like in English. Maybe I'm the closed off one here, who knew.
