TIL the "watching at 1.5x speed" crowd actually had a point

After 3 years of mocking my buddy for blasting through episodes, I finally tried it on a slow 40-episode shonen last month and realized I wasn't missing plot, I was just skipping 10 seconds of reaction shots per scene. Has anyone else flipped on this after being a purist for so long?

The 10 second mark is actually pretty accurate since most anime reaction shots run 8 to 12 seconds, so you're trimming a real chunk of dead air. But I'd say you do miss a little bit of the pacing and mood, especially in slower dramatic scenes where the silence is supposed to hit you. Once you get used to 1.5x, going back to normal speed feels like watching paint dry, so it's a slippery slope for sure.
