Warning: I just realized the dub of that 90s anime I loved is totally different from the sub
I used to only watch the English dub of Sailor Moon back in 1998 on Toonami, the one with the weird edited episodes and renamed characters. After I watched the Viz Media redub last month with the original Japanese script, I felt like I was lied to for 25 years. The whole tone changed - it's way more serious and emotional than the goofy version I grew up with. Has anyone else had their childhood favorite completely ruined after seeing the original version?

Gotta disagree with the whole "ruined" thing. I actually watched the subs first as a teen on fansubs and then caught the dub later and honestly? They're just two totally different shows. Like Sailor Moon S sub has that whole season arc about the Holy Grail and pure hearts being super emotional and symbolic. The dub turned it into Serena needing to find the "Heart of the Silver Crystal" and made it way more simple. I think we gotta accept the dub was its own weird creative project from the 90s, not a direct translation. It's like comparing the American Godzilla movie to the Japanese original - same name, totally different vibe, both have their place.

Watching the sub is like finding out your favorite cartoon was secretly a drama the whole time.
