A client in Boise told me my stump grinding was too shallow

He pointed out I was leaving about 4 inches of root flare, which he said would sprout suckers. Now I always grind down to at least 6 inches below grade on residential jobs. Anyone else adjust their depth after getting called out?

Wait, did he want you to grind the actual root flare? That's wild lol. Going deeper is smart though, saves you a callback for sure.

But honestly how much damage can a little grinding really do? I've seen stumps ground down pretty close without killing the tree. Maybe @the_betty is right and it's overkill, but I guess better safe than sorry if you don't want it coming back.

Nah, grinding too deep can really mess with the soil though.
