That old arborist in Ohio" line got me. Had a guy once who insisted on topping his maples to "keep them small." Two years later those trees looked like a bad haircut - all these skinny shoots growing straight up like they were reaching for something. Neighbor's untrimmed oak right next to it was fine, just doing its thing. Had to clean up dead branches from that topped mess every storm season. Trees know what they're doing most of the time, we just get in the way.
