Got stuck for a full day trying to free a climbing line from a huge old oak in Springfield

Oh man, "stuck for a full day" brings back a memory. My buddy had a rope get absolutely eaten by a pine tree. We tried throwing sticks, another rope, everything. Ended up having to call a local arborist who had this crazy long pole saw. He got it down in ten minutes but we felt pretty silly. What did you finally try to get it loose?

My own personal low point was spending three hours trying to hook a stuck throw line with a fishing rod in Decatur. I even duct taped a coat hanger to a broom handle. The whole thing just made the knot worse. My neighbor saw the whole disaster from his porch and hasn't let me forget it.
