Old timer in Spokane told me I was tying my dead branches too tight on the lowering line, took me 3 months to realize he was right.

He showed me how a half hitch gives the ground crew way more control on a 40 foot pine and I stopped crushing all my lower limbs on the way down, anyone else get a tip that took forever to click?

wait wait wait, THREE MONTHS?! You went through three months of crushing limbs before you figured out a half hitch was the fix? Man, I woulda lost my mind after the second tree. I did the same thing though with my rigging - kept using a simple wrap thinking tighter was better and ended up snapping so many branches I looked like I was pruning the whole tree twice. Once a buddy showed me a clove hitch on the butt end it was like a whole new world opened up. Honestly makes me wonder how many other little tricks we're all just missing because nobody bothers to say anything.

Oh man that clove hitch is a lifesaver lol. I spent a whole summer putting extra tension on my lines thinking I was being careful and then watched a coworker just flick one on in like two seconds and everything just worked.
