Old-timer told me I climb too safe, and now I'm second guessing everything

Had a long talk with a retired climber named Ray at the local equipment shop in Portland last weekend. He watched me prep for a removal and said I spend too much time on rope adjustments and not enough trusting the tree. I've been doing this 9 years and always thought extra tie-ins were just good practice, but he pointed out that my climb times are probably double what they need to be. He said, 'The tree tells you where to go if you listen, not if you fight it with gear.' Now I'm wondering if I've been overcomplicating stuff for clients who pay by the hour... and honestly that stings. Has anyone else had a veteran challenge their whole approach and make them feel like a rookie again?
