Shoutout to the guy in Boise who showed me a 3 cut prune on a 60 year old maple
I was doing a removal job near Boise last month and the homeowner's neighbor came out to watch. He pointed at the big maple in his yard and showed me how he takes off only 3 branches a year, no more, and the tree looks better than anything I've touched with a pole saw. He does it in late winter and swears the tree heals faster that way. Anyone else cut back this hard on older trees or am I the only one who was going way too aggressive?
For years I was the guy hacking away with a pole saw thinking more cuts meant better shape. Then I watched an old timer work on a huge oak and he took off maybe four branches total. The tree filled in better that spring than anything I ever butchered. What got me was how he explained it. Older trees have less energy to bounce back, so every cut is a big deal to them. Now I aim for a few well placed cuts instead of fifty sloppy ones and my results look way better. That Boise guy knows what he is doing.
