Spiked boots up a white oak in 2008 vs my Silky and a flip line now
Back in 2008 I climbed a big white oak in Roanoke with steel spikes and a hemp rope, and my forearms were shot after 20 minutes. Now I carry a Silky and a wire core flip line, and the same kind of tree takes me half the time. Last week I looked down from a red oak and thought about how the old guys told me spikes were the only way. I still spike on removals but never on a trim, and newer guys laugh when I say the ropes used to be stiff as a board. Anybody else started before throw lines and just learned to sling a weight by hand?
