Talking to a park ranger made me question my stump grinding prices

I was doing a removal in the state park near Springfield and got chatting with one of the rangers. He mentioned they have a budget of about $8,000 a year just for stump removal on their trails, and they do it all in-house. He said 'We just chip the big stuff for mulch and let the small ones rot, it's cheaper for us.' I usually charge $250 minimum for a stump under 24 inches. It got me thinking maybe my pricing is too rigid for certain jobs, like municipal or non-profit work. Has anyone else adjusted their rates for public land or trail maintenance gigs?

Yeah, @margaretj40 has a point, but hearing their budget still makes my wallet hurt a little.

Might be comparing apples to oranges there. Their in-house cost includes salary and benefits, not just the grinding. Your price is for a turnkey service.

But @owens.nancy is right to feel that sting, because a turnkey service should SAVE them money overall.
