Took a climbing class in Dayton and found out my lanyard was slack the whole time
I've been running a chainsaw up in trees for about 11 years now and I thought I had my whole setup dialed. Then two weeks ago I took a rec climbing class down in Dayton and the instructor watched me work up a white oak and just shook his head. He pointed out I'd been keeping my flip line way too long, like 3 feet of slack, because that's how the guy who trained me back in 2013 did it. I tested it on a couple of removals after that and the saw cut felt twitchy without that much room, so I guess I trusted the old habit over what actually feels safe. I went back through my gear and shortened the line by about 8 inches and the difference on a leaner is night and day. Any of you older climbers ever have a young instructor call out something you'd been doing wrong for a decade?
