Watched a 92 year old pecan tree get cabled in Savannah last week, and the guy let me film the whole thing
I was in Savannah last week doing some pruning work on a job off Bull Street, and the homeowner hired a separate crew to cable a huge pecan tree in the front yard. The lead guy was maybe 60 and had been doing it since he was 19. He spent 45 minutes just looking up at the crown before he touched anything, then ran two 3/8 inch cables about 25 feet up between the two main leaders. What got me was he used a come-along to pull the leaders together slow, maybe an inch at a time, and checked the bark every few cranks for splitting. He said a cable done wrong just moves the break to a different spot. I've done maybe a dozen cable jobs and I've never taken that long measuring or checking, and now I'm wondering if I've been rushing it. Do you all pull slowly like that or just snug it up and call it done?
