Dropped $400 on a high-end metal detector for my local field survey

Found a single modern coin and a ton of old nails, so it basically burned me. Anyone have a better method for initial site scanning that doesn't break the bank?

Ever think a cheap pinpointer would do the job? Honestly, I used to want the fancy gear too, but my buddy's basic one finds the good spots first.

@elizabeth220 you're right, but cheap pin pointers exist for a reason. They aren't all junk, but you really do get what you pay for with them.
