Field school in Turkey pushed me to pick trowel vs brush, still second guessing

During a dig near Ephesus last summer, my supervisor made me choose between cleaning artifacts with a dental pick or a soft brush after I kept scratching a Roman coin. I went with the brush because it felt safer, but now my trench partner finds more detail with the pick and I'm wondering if I played it too cautious. Anyone else had to lock in a tool early on and later felt like the other option was the right call?
