Found a weird rock in my backyard in Ohio and my buddy says it might be a hand axe
I was digging a fire pit behind my house near Dayton and pulled up this chunky gray rock with what looked like chips taken off both sides. My buddy who studies this stuff says the flaking pattern looks like someone worked it on purpose, maybe 10,000 years ago, but I honestly can't tell if it's a real tool or just a rock that got banged up by a plow. How do you guys tell the difference without sending it to a lab?
How big is it and does the chipping go all the way around the edges or just on one side? Plow damage usually looks random, but if the flakes come off in a pattern like a fan, that's a good sign someone made it on purpose.
