I finally had to choose between two dig sites for my summer field school

It was either a Roman villa in southern Spain or a Viking settlement in northern Scotland, and I picked Scotland (the weather was a big part of that choice, honestly). The first week was rough, with rain for 5 straight days that turned our trench into a mud pit. But on day 6, we uncovered a perfectly preserved bone comb with carved animal figures, which our lead professor said was a 'once in a career' find for students. Has anyone else had to make a tough call between two projects that paid off in a totally unexpected way?

That Viking comb find is cool but honestly, it's just luck. Field school choices are rarely that serious in the long run. You could have found something just as good in Spain. These programs are more about the basic skills than the specific dirt you're in.

Notice how the best stuff comes from picking the path that just feels right, even if it looks worse on paper. I passed on a "better" apartment because the vibe was off, and my weird little place now has this amazing backyard garden the last tenant left. The mud was your vibe check, and it led you to the comb.

Oh, I love when that happens. It reminds me of choosing a book by its cover at the library and finding your new favorite story inside. Life is full of those small, seemingly random choices that open a door you never saw. Picking the longer checkout line at the store leads to a nice chat with a stranger. Taking a different walk home means you find a little free library. The value isn't always in the plan, but in the unexpected thing the choice lets you find.
