My metal detector trip to the Oregon coast turned into a $300 lesson

I bought a cheap detector online for a beach trip near Newport, thinking I'd find old coins or maybe even a shipwreck artifact. After two full days of digging up nothing but pull tabs and modern bottle caps, I realized the thing couldn't tell iron from anything else. Has anyone had better luck with a specific brand or model for saltwater beaches?

What's the deal with cheap tools always promising big results and delivering junk? I see this everywhere, from kitchen gadgets that break after one use to those flimsy phone chargers. For saltwater beaches, you really need a detector with a specific ground balance setting to handle the minerals. I've heard the Minelab Vanquish models are solid for beginners without costing a fortune.

Honestly, I bought a cheap detector once and it just screamed nonstop on wet sand. Total waste. Ended up with a Vanquish like you said and it actually works.
