My trowel handle snapped at a dig in Flagstaff, now I wrap grips with hockey tape

Last Tuesday the wooden handle broke clean off my old Marshalltown mid-sweep on a Hohokam pit house, so I grabbed some tape from my truck and wrapped the stub, which actually gave me better control on the final day of excavation. Anyone else jury-rig their field gear instead of buying new, or am I the only one running a cobbled together kit?

Tried that exact fix a few years back when my favorite Marshalltown handle splintered on a dry Utah site. The hockey tape worked fine, but I learned to keep a spare wooden handle in my field bag now, because the tape can get slick when your hands sweat or it rains. Also, make sure you sand down any rough splinters before you wrap, otherwise the tape tears and you are back to square one mid-trowel. Wrapped tools sometimes look rough, but they do the job better than a brand new one you have to break in.
