Remember when they found that Roman ship in the mud near London?

Last week, I saw a new 3D model of the whole site online, which is a big change from three years ago when they were still pulling pieces out by hand. It got me thinking about how fast tech changes what we can see and do in this field. What's the coolest new tool you've seen change how we look at old stuff?

Wait, you used to think lidar was just for ground surveys and local projects... I'll admit I was totally in that camp, I figured space-based lidar was too expensive or not good enough to be useful. But seeing this and reading up on it, it really changed my mind... the scale of data you can get about forests, ice sheets, and even the ocean floor from orbit is just wild. It's like getting a detailed 3D map of the whole planet from above, not just a few spots here and there. Makes me wonder what else we're missing by not looking at things from a higher vantage point...

Honestly parkermorgan, what kind of data are you trying to get with it?
