Showerthought: why do so many dig sites get reburied after they're studied?

I was watching a documentary on that Neanderthal cave in France and they said they backfill most of it after the work is done. I get preserving it for the future but doesn't that make it harder for someone 50 years from now to recheck your findings?

My dig sites stay buried too, just ask my laundry basket.

But doesn't backfilling kind of defeat the whole point of having an open record for other researchers to verify? I saw a paper where they reburied some pottery fragments and now nobody can double check the original dating methods. Feels like we're just taking future scientists at their word without giving them a chance to look at the actual stuff.

Leave some dirt for the next generation to find too.
