Stumbled on a Roman coin while digging a post hole in my backyard
Last summer I was putting in a fence near Austin and my shovel hit something hard. Pulled out this small bronze coin with a worn emperor profile on it. Turned out to be from the 3rd century AD, probably dropped by some traveler way off the known trade routes. Now I check every dirt pile twice before I fill anything in. Anyone else find old stuff in random places like this?

Oh man, @caleb140, my buddy found a whole Civil War era button just walking his dog in a Georgia ravine. It's crazy what's just lying around.

Saw a documentary once where a guy in England found a whole Viking silver hoard with his metal detector in a totally normal looking field. Makes you wonder what's just under the surface everywhere. That coin find near Austin is wild, makes sense with all the old Spanish trails through Texas too. My buddy's dad found an old musket ball in his garden up in Pennsylvania. Always cool when history just pops up like that.
