That clear difference in soil layers I saw at the Jefferson site last fall
I was out volunteering at the old Jefferson farm dig in Virginia back in October. It struck me how the plow zone layer above was all mixed up with bits of modern trash, but just 8 inches down the soil was dark and uniform with only 18th century artifacts. It really made me think about how a few decades of farming can totally scramble the record. Has anyone else noticed a sharp boundary like that between time periods on a site?

Man, totally! Had the same sharp cutoff on a 19th century homestead in Ohio. Wild stuff.

Careful with the gas lines though, almost dug one up myself.
