The plaster cast of a Roman footprint that stopped our dig cold
We were surveying a site near York last spring and found a perfect footprint pressed into what looked like a tile, but the foreman said it was a deliberate votive imprint, not waste. I spent 3 hours re-doing our grid lines because of that one find, and it made me question how many casual marks we bulldoze past as trash. Has anyone else hit a feature that forced you to reshuffle your whole excavation plan?

Deliberate votive imprint" is such a perfect phrase, it really sticks. That's the thing, we're all walking around with our heads down, missing the stuff that actually matters. Last week I found a weird worn spot on my kitchen counter and spent an hour wondering if some previous owner had a daily ritual there, like kneading dough or sharpening knives. It's humbling to think how many little marks we step over, both in the dirt and in our own houses, because we're too busy trying to keep the bigger picture tidy. Sometimes the smallest thing is the one that tells you the most, you just have to stop and take it seriously.
