TIL debating whether to pay for a professional excavation or do it myself on a Roman site in Wales cost me £600
Has anyone else had this kind of luck versus skill debate, and how much did you drop on it?

My buddy tried to dig a trench for his foundation back in 2017 and hit an old septic tank no one knew about. Cost him $2,000 in cleanup fees and a whole weekend of his life he never got back. Sometimes paying the pros is just cheaper in the long run if you ask me.

That "whole weekend he never got back" part hits close to home. I did a similar thing back in 2019 when I tried to save money digging my own post holes for a deck. I hit a buried gas line (the old kind that wasn't marked properly) and had to wait three days for the gas company to come out and fix it. Cost me $400 in fines and I had to reschedule my concrete pour, which meant I lost the deposit on the truck rental. Learned the hard way that a weekend of "free work" can turn into a month of headaches real quick.
