Visited Mesa Verde last summer and noticed something weird about the cliff dwellings

I finally made it out to Mesa Verde in June. Park ranger said most people rush through. So I spent a whole day just sitting and watching. What caught me was how small the doorways really are. Not one of them is taller than like four feet. Has anyone else noticed that and wondered if there's a reason beyond just keeping heat in?

Right, those tiny doors are wild, I kept trying to picture people going through them all day.
