Is gouache actually just fancy watercolor? my art group is split

I was reading a book on watercolor techniques last night and saw a stat that said gouache is just opaque watercolor with chalk or white pigment added. That got me thinking because I've been using gouache for 2 years and treating it totally different, like oil paint. Half my art group says it's a separate medium with its own rules, the other half says it's basically watercolor with training wheels. Anyone else ever dug into the actual chemistry of this, or do you just paint and not care? I'm honestly torn on whether to keep buying both or just stick with one.
