Thought tracing paper was cheating until my sister in law handed me her sketchbook in Phoenix
I always figured real artists draw freehand and tracing paper is just a crutch for people who can't commit to a line. Then my sister in law showed me her sketchbook from a figure drawing class at ASU and half of it was traced studies over photos, each one labeled with what she was trying to learn like shoulder shapes or hand poses. She said the paper lets her practice the same curve 40 times without burning out her wrist, and her freehand stuff got way better in 3 months. Now I keep a pad on my desk and use it to rough out proportions before committing to the final drawing. Does anyone else trace over references, or do you just sketch loose and clean it up after?
