My uncle's career advice cost me a year in a job I hated

Back in 2021 my uncle kept pushing me to take a warehouse supervisor role in Phoenix because he said management experience is management experience, no matter the field. I took it and spent 12 months dealing with schedules and inventory reports, totally miserable. Turns out nobody in IT hiring cared about that supervisory title, they just saw a gap in my actual technical work. I finally got back into a help desk role last March at $4 less per hour, and it took me two years to recover the lost pay. Has anyone else taken family advice that sounded logical but completely derailed their career path?

My aunt did the same thing to me in 2018. She swore a retail manager title would open doors. All it did was make me explain why I left tech for a year in every single interview. That year cost me way more than the pay cut.
