PSA: I lost 3 hours of my life to a "quick" FAQ page rewrite last month
I went back through my old FAQ pages from a site I run in Portland and compared them to the ones I rewrote in March. The old ones answered questions in one line. The new ones had 4 paragraph stories per question. Bounce rate on those pages went from 62% to 81% in 6 weeks, and people stopped emailing me questions at all. My buddy who does support said customers told him the pages felt like "reading a blog when I just want an answer." Anyone else notice that writing longer answers backfires, or is it just my site?
Six weeks is about the same lag I saw when I bloated my FAQ page in 2021. Odd part was Google loved it, rankings went up, but the "contact us" form went dead quiet. Turns out people were bouncing back to search results instead of reading down the page, so the win was fake.
