TIL that asking 20 random people for directions in a new city got me way more honest info than any map app
So I moved to Portland, Oregon about 5 months ago and I've been leaning hard on my phone for everything. But my battery died near the Saturday Market a couple weeks back and I had to actually ask strangers how to get to this taco spot my coworker swore by. The first guy, some dude in a Trail Blazers hat, gave me the basic left-right-left route and then said the food cart moved to the other side of the block 3 weeks prior. A woman walking her corgi cut in and said to skip the cart and go to the brick building two doors down, way less line. Then a barista on her smoke break pointed at a parking lot and said to cut through it or I'd add 15 minutes. By the time I got there I had 4 different opinions and honestly every one of them was useful. It hit me that Reddit threads and Google reviews from 8 months back will never tell you a cart moved or that a line wraps around the block now. Has anyone else noticed that the best info comes from just asking whoever is standing right there?
