A contractor told me my shelves would sag with 3/4 inch plywood... he was right after 8 months

A contractor who was working on my neighbor's house walked by and saw me building some heavy storage shelves in my garage. He told me I needed to use 1 inch plywood or they would sag under the weight of paint cans and tools. I figured he was just trying to upsell me on something fancier, so I ignored him and used the 3/4 inch I already had. Well, 8 months later the middle of those shelves are bowing about a half inch down and my five gallon buckets of joint compound are starting to slide off. Has anyone else had a contractor give you advice on a DIY project that turned out to be spot on?
