Debate: Dishwasher or hand washing for everyday dishes?

I've been testing both for two weeks now and my dishwasher wins every time on water usage but my hand washing is way faster for small loads. Which side do you fall on for a typical family dinner cleanup?

My house settled this with a timer and a measuring cup. Hand washing a full dinner load for 4 people used 12 gallons of hot water versus the dishwasher's 4 gallons for the same load. The key difference for me was scraping plates instead of rinsing them before loading the dishwasher. I keep a small dishpan in the sink for the couple of plates and coffee mugs from breakfast. But for that evening mess with pots and greasy pans, the dishwasher wins every time because it sanitizes better than my hands can handle.
