My brother told me to ask for a raise after 2 years, and I was wrong to wait

He said I should just ask my boss directly instead of waiting for a review. I finally did it last month, and my boss said yes right away, giving me an extra $1.50 an hour. I had been nervous for no reason, thinking it wasn't the right time. Has anyone else been surprised by how simple asking for something turned out to be?

My old boss always made raises seem impossible to get.

Totally get what the_sam is saying. Some bosses act like giving a raise is the same as pulling their own teeth. It creates this weird fear that asking is out of line. Your story shows how much of that is just a power move to keep pay low. They rely on people being too nervous to speak up. More people need to realize their own value and just ask, because the worst they can say is no. Waiting for permission just leaves money on the table.
