My brother's "just use a dry erase marker" advice backfired hard

Last month I was building a gaming desk from IKEA and the cam locks would not line up no matter what I did. My brother came over, looked at it for two seconds, and said "just use a dry erase marker to mark the holes, you're overthinking it." So I drew all these little dots on the board, wiped them off after, and now there's permanent blue ghost lines all over the top panel because that particular finish absorbs marker like a sponge. He laughed and walked away. Now I have to buy a full desk wrap for like 40 bucks to cover it up. Has anyone else had advice from a relative that was so confidently wrong you still get mad thinking about it?
