Question about those 'life hack' videos that tell you to freeze your credit cards in ice

I froze my debit card in a water bottle last January to stop impulse spending, but then forgot about it when my car broke down in Tulsa and had to chip it out with a screwdriver at 6am, has anyone else actually made this hack work or is it just for people with zero emergencies?
