Showerthought: The $40 I wasted on a 'miracle' stain remover that didn't work

So last month I saw this ad for a spray that claimed to get out ANY stain, even set-in red wine. I was like, 'Sure, let me drop $40 on this magic bottle.' Got it home, tried it on a coffee spill on my white rug, and nothing happened. Not even a little fade. I tried it on three more stains, including an old ketchup mark from a party, and nada. Now I'm sitting here with a half-full bottle and zero results. Has anyone else fallen for a cleaning product that was all hype? What actually works for stubborn stains?

Honestly I kinda feel like you're blaming the product for user error here. Most stain removers need you to treat the stain right away not let it sit for weeks on a rug. If you want something that actually works try plain old dish soap and hydrogen peroxide mixed together it costs like $3 and handles pretty much everything.

Honestly that user error comment is a bit harsh but I get where they're coming from. Tbh the bigger pattern I've noticed is that we're all taught to believe there's a magic fix for everything these days. We see these flashy ads with perfect before and after photos and we think we can skip the hard work. But most things worth doing take actual effort and multiple tries not one miracle product. A real lifesaver for me has been understanding that stains are like problems you have to tackle step by step not just spray and hope. Ngl we'd all save a lot of money and frustration if we accepted that simple approaches usually beat expensive shortcuts.
