TIL the free museum in Dayton has a working 1905 adding machine you can actually crank
I killed two hours at the free museum in Dayton last month and found a 1905 adding machine in the back room with a sign saying visitors could try it. I cranked out a pretend payroll for 12 guys and got weirdly into it, which made me wonder how many people walk past it without touching the thing. What random old machine has pulled you in like that?
Most people probably poke it once, see it's not a screen, and walk off lol. There's a hand cranked nickelodeon at a place near me and I spent like 20 minutes feeding it coins. Old machines just hit different when you can actually touch them and hear them work. That adding machine sounds way cooler than any app on my phone.
